However this does not seem to have resolved the matter. I have just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 and have installed the newest version of Open Office 4.1.1 as the problems were happening with the last version. Btw the 'cancel' button is greyed out on the launch screen. Also some of the files it tries to 'recover' have been deleted so I want to stop it looking for those. Is there a way to stop it trying to automatically recover files? I have the documents saved on two USBs and a second back up in the Cloud so I can recover it myself from any of those.
